The clutch is what lets you change gear, and like most components it wears over time. It needs replacing before it's so worn that it fails — usually on a hill, at the worst possible moment.

Signs your clutch is on its way out
- Slipping — the revs rise but the car doesn't pick up speed, especially under load
- A high or heavy biting point, or a pedal that feels spongy or sticks down
- Difficulty selecting gears, or a crunch going into gear
- Juddering as you pull away
- A burning smell after heavy use or hill starts
What a clutch replacement involves
We fit a complete kit — friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing — and replace the dual-mass flywheel where it's worn, rather than fit a new clutch against a flywheel that's already on its way out. We'll also check the hydraulics (master and slave cylinders) and the gearbox oil while everything is apart.
